Book Lists - Scarlet Pimpernal - Suggested Readings

  • The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baronness Emmuska Orczy - Adventure…Romance…International Intrigue…all this and more in a story that takes place during the French Revolution. The play and many other versions are based on this novel and its many sequels.
  • Robin Hood by Paul Creswick - The classic adventure story of the outlaw who "steals from the rich to give to the poor." Although the Scarlet Pimpernel saved the rich (from a certain and grisly death), he and Robin Hood have a surprising amount in common.
  • The Secret of Sarah Revere by Ann Rinaldi - The Paul Revere’s daughter, Sarah, feels like she’s fighting her own revolution at home. Why is her mother paying so much attention to her father’s fellow patriot? Why is it so hard to be considered a young woman? Sarah has a front row seat to the American Revolution and much, much more.
  • Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli - Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee was a legend in his own time. You could almost call him a modern superhero. Maniac doesn’t wear a mask, but his identity is somewhat of a mystery and the way he brings a small town together is, with out a doubt, heroic.
  • The Ruby in the Smoke By Philip Pullman - When Ruby’s father dies, mystery and adventure follow fast behind. She must find out who (or what) is behind his suspicious death in a faraway land, locate a valuable ruby, and somehow manage to stay alive.
  • Robespierre and the French Revolution by Tom McGowen (944.04 MCG A) portrait of one of the leading revolutionaries of the time, this book gives a good overview of the motivations behind the French Revolution.
  • Life During the French Revolution by Gail Stewart (944.04 STE) Through descriptions of how the French Revolution impacted the day to day lives of people, Steward provides a good source for background material relating to this period of history.
