- NARA's 1930 Census Comprehensive Guide - From the National Archives and Records Administration
- NARA's 1930 Census Search Page - This site outlines the two basic methods for locating 1930 Census data: Soundex searching and geographic searching. To begin searching, go to the top left side of the page and click on the down arrow. Then select the state you wish to search.
- 1880 Census Index at FamilySearch.org - FamilySearch.org provides free access to an 1880 United States Census Index. An 1881 British Isles Census Index and an 1881 Canadian Census Index are also available here.
Ethnic and Religious Sites
- AfriGeneas - This site is devoted to African ancestry in the Americas. It is a community of researchers with mail lists, message boards, and chats. Most notable is its surname database that can connect genealogists with others who are researching the same surname in the same town and/or county during specific time periods.
- Genealogy.net - This site includes many different sources of information for people doing their German genealogy, including links to ship and passenger lists.
- JewishGen - JewishGen®, Inc. is the primary internet source connecting researchers of Jewish genealogy worldwide.

- Metro Louisville - Jefferson County Kentucky GenWeb Project - "In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of each county's web page. These pages are a result of that effort." This site includes links to cemeteries, military records, vital statistics and other useful information.

General Genealogy Sites
- Ancestry.com - Ancestry.com is an online genealogy community with a plethora of resources, including census records, vital records, immigration records, military records, family tree resources, and more. Access to much of this content is only accessible by paying annual fees, but there are several free features.
- Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet - Cyndi’s list is a starting point for genealogical research online. The site has more than 250,000 links that point users to genealogy web pages. The links are categorized and cross-referenced.
- Family Search - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints sponsors this site, which has a large collection of free family history, family tree, and genealogical records. You can also go here to learn more about the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.
- WorldGenWeb - Go here to find resources by country. Each country has its own site, which may provide you with online resources, email lists, query boards, contact information for local libraries and archives, maps, local histories, and more.
- USGenWeb Project - This is the United States’ page for the WorldGenWeb Project. The goal of the site is “to provide free genealogy websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States.”
Immigrants
- Ellis Island Home Page - This is the official web site of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. Visitors to this site can set up a free user account and then login to search passenger records.
- NARA's Immigration Records - This National Archives & Records Administration site explains where to find passenger lists and immigration records and provides several links to immigration resources.
- The American Immigrant Wall of Honor - Visit this site to search a database of names inscribed on the wall at Ellis Island.

- Kentucky Vital Records Index
- The Kentucky GenWeb Project - Hosted by a group of volunteers, this site is a good starting point for Kentucky genealogical research. It also provides information on Kentucky history and Kentucky counties.
- Rootsweb - Kentucky genealogical information from Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative.
- Revolutionary War Warrants from the Kentucky Secretary of State - This database is an index to 4,748 land warrants that Virginia issued to Revolutionary War veterans. It also provides access to digitized images of the warrants.
- Kentucky Genealogy Resources at KYVL’s Virtual Reference Desk - Explore the Kentucky genealogy sources available through the Kentucky Virtual Library’s Virtual Reference Desk
Military
- Online Searchable Military Records & Databases - This is a list of links for information for military records from the Revolutionary War to Korea and Vietnam.
- Civil War Index Page - This site is a directory that links users to several Civil War pages. It is maintained by Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota.
- Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System - The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a computerized database containing very basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War. The initial focus of the CWSS is the Names Index Project, a project to enter names and other basic information from 6.3 million soldier records in the National Archives. The facts about the soldiers were entered from records that are indexed to many millions of other documents about Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration.
- Military Personnel Records Center - This division of the National Archives & Records Administration is the repository for military records for all discharged and deceased veterans who served during the 20th Century.
- Kentucky Military Records - The Military Records section has information from the Indian War to Vietnam.
- The War of the Rebellion - "Begun in 1874 with an amendment to an appropriations bill, the War of the Rebellion has evolved into a massive 156-volume set comprising official correspondence, battle reports, military records, supplements and addendums for both the Union and Confederate armies. Extensive research was conducted on each entry to verify reliability and accuracy."
- Kentucky in the Military - This is a Rootsweb project with information on Kentucky in the Revolutionary War, Mexican War, War of 1812 and the Civil War.
- Kentucky Research Guidance from FamilySearch® Internet Genealogy Service - Military Records available for Kentucky from all wars up to Vietnam.

Newspapers
- UK’s Master Negative Microfilm Database - The University of Kentucky has the world’s largest collection of Kentucky newspapers. This database lists “Kentucky newspapers that have been microfilmed at the University of Kentucky, including historic papers filmed during the Kentucky Newspaper Project and other newspaper back-files as they become available.” The microfilmed newspapers in this database can be viewed at UK’s W.T. Young library. UK Libraries will also loan out these microfilm to other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. To submit an Interlibrary Loan Request with LFPL, click here.
- Kenton County Public Library’s Northern KY Newspaper Index - KCPL staff maintains this index to Northern Kentucky Newspapers, which covers 1835-1932 and 1984 to the present. Newspapers indexed include the Kentucky Post, Kentucky Enquirer, Daily Commonwealth, Covington Journal, Sunday Challenger, Newport Local, Kentucky State Journal, Ticket, and others.
- Lexington Public Library’s Local History Index - “The selective citations included in the Lexington Public Library’s Local History Index appeared in various Lexington newspapers beginning with the Kentucky Gazette in 1787 and continuing through the current Lexington Herald-Leader. The nucleus of the database index is a card file in the Kentucky Room that has been developed over a number of years. Not all of the newspapers for all years were indexed.”
Obituaries
- ObitFinder™ - "ObitFinder™ searches obituaries from more than 400 U.S., Canadian & U.K. newspapers and the U.S. Social Security Death Index to provide the most accurate and timely obituary information available. Recently published obituaries can be accessed at no charge, as can Social Security Death Index information." Obituaries from our archive can be accessed for a small fee.
- Owensboro Area Death Index - Since 1977 Daviess County Public Library staff has abstracted obituary information from the Owensboro Messenger and the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer. The library provides this online index, which covers two time periods: 1890 -1919 and 1980 to the present.
- State and Local Obituaries - State and local obituaries are posted by the Courier Journal for 365 days.

Vital Statistics
- Vital Records Information for the United States - "This web site provides information on how to obtain vital records (such as birth certificates, death records, marriage licenses and divorce decrees) from each state, territory and county of the United States. See the guidelines for information on how to order vital records. If you are looking for vital records from a foreign county, see my links to international vital records web sites."
- Kentucky Vital Records Index - The University of Kentucky hosts this online database of select Kentucky vital statistics information. Users can search Kentucky Deaths from 1911-1992, Kentucky Marriages from 1973-1993, and Kentucky Divorces from 1973 to 1993.
- Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services - The Office of Vital Statistics has no records of births and deaths occurring prior to Jan. 1, 1911except delayed records of births for those born before 1911, which have been established by affidavits and documentary evidence. Central registration of marriages and divorces began in Kentucky in June 1958. The Office of Vital Statistics has no records of marriages and divorces prior to that date. Copies of marriage certificates prior to June 1958 may be obtained from the county clerk in the county where the license was issued. Records of divorce proceedings are available from the clerk of the circuit court that granted the decree. The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, P.O. Box 537, 300 Coffee Tree Road, Frankfort, KY 40602, (5O2) 564-8300, has birth and death records for the cities of Louisville, Lexington, Covington and Newport, which were established under city ordinance prior to 1911. They also have pre-1911 birth and death records (statewide coverage) and 1911-1955 death records (statewide coverage)."
- DPH Data Warehouse - Find all kinds of facts from the Department for Health Services here. Vital statistics from 1996-2004 are also included here.
- Social Security Death Index - A computerized index to deaths reported and/or death benefits paid out from 1962 to the present time. This index can provide a person’s birth date, death date, state of residence when the social security number was issued, and last residence.
