Class Descriptions
Core Classes
These classes are designed for beginning computer users. We recommend taking the classes in the order listed.
- Computer Basics -For beginning computer users with little or no prior experience. Participants will learn briefly about the history of personal computer and basics about computer hardware such as the CPU, keyboard, mouse, printers, scanners, and other peripheral devices. (see schedule)
- Windows Basics - For those who are interested in learning about the popular computer operating system. Participants will learn how to perform basic computer operations, including using the mouse, launching programs, manipulating windows, working with the desktop, and saving files. (see schedule)
- Internet Basics - This is a beginning class on navigating the Internet. Participants will learn how the Internet works, learn to use Internet Explorer and get an introduction to basic search techniques. (see schedule)
- Introduction to Microsoft Word - Teaches participants the fundamentals of word processing using Microsoft Word 2000. Participants will learn about formatting fonts and paragraphs, saving documents, printing, and basic page layout. (see schedule)
- Getting the Most Out of the Library Web Site - For those who have the skills taught in the Computing and Internet classes, this hands-on workshop teaches participants how to use the many rich resources on the library website. Learn to locate books and materials in the library's collection, find and print full-text newspaper and magazine articles online, and see what else is available in other databases for LFPL cardholders. Intermediate Classes
We recommend taking the Core Classes before taking these more advanced courses.
- Intermediate Internet Searching - Learn to use advanced Internet tools and techniques, such as meta search engines, limiters and Boolean operators. Discover criteria for evaluating information online. This class builds on the skills learned in Internet Basics. (see schedule)
- Intermediate Microsoft Excel - Build on the basics taught in Introduction to Microsoft Excel. Learn to create charts, use formulas, continue series, and sort and filter data.(see schedule)
- Intermediate Microsoft PowerPoint - Build on the skills learned in Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint. Add movie clips, sound clips, tables, charts, WordArt, and hyperlinks to your presentation. Customize the slide show's layout, background, font style and bullet styles. (see schedule)
- Intermediate Microsoft Publisher - Advance beyond the desktop publishing skills learned in Introduction to Microsoft Publisher. Learn to insert text, picture, WordArt, auto shape, and table frames, and discover how to rotate, flip, layer, align, group, and crop the frames for advanced layout designs. (see schedule)
- Intermediate Microsoft Word - Build on the basics taught in Introduction to Microsoft Word. Learn to create bulleted and numbered lists, add borders and shading, adjust page margins and spacing, and insert clip art, tables, and page numbers.(see schedule)
- Intermediate Microsoft Word: Mail Merge - Learn to take advantage of this specialized tool to create form letters, address labels and envelopes. (see schedule)
- Introduction to Microsoft Access - Learn about this database management program and create a table, form, query and report using its wizards. (see schedule)
- Introduction to Microsoft Excel - Learn the basics of how to use a spreadsheet program, including how to navigate the environment, enter data, format cells, and perform basic calculations with functions. (see schedule)
- Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint - Begin creating dynamic, computerized slide shows with professional looking templates and animated slide transitions and entrance effects.(see schedule)
- Introduction to Microsoft Publisher - Use Publisher wizards to create calendars, greeting cards, business cards, and other desktop publishing products. (see schedule)
Special Workshops
We recommend taking the Core Classes before taking these more advanced, special topic workshops.
- Business Research Online - Reviews the Library's commercial, web-based databases covering industry surveys, marketing and consumer buying patterns. Internet links of business interest and a brief tour of the Business Information Collection are included. (see schedule)
- Genealogy Online Workshop - Learn about different genealogy database and resources available through the library online. (see schedule)
- Patents and Trademarks Workshop - For the independent inventor/entrepreneur, this class is an introduction to intellectual property law, concentrating on searching for patents and trademarks on both the web and in-house equipment. (see schedule)
- Genealogy Resources in Print and Microform Workshop - an introduction to the rich and varied resources that new and seasoned genealogy researchers will find helpful in tracing their family history. Meets at the second-floor reference desk.(see schedule)
- Grantseeking Basics for Nonprofit Organizations - For those working or volunteering for nonprofit organizations, this workshop explains the research process in seeking grants, the Foundation Center resources available in finding the right grants that will benefit your organization and the essential elements of writing successful grant proposals. (see schedule)
- Resume Writing Workshop - Learn how to create or update a basic, well-written resume.(see schedule)
- Career and Job Search Workshop - An overview of various web-based job-searching sites for local, state, and national job listings. Information on workforce trends and local free or low-cost career centers that offer career counseling, assistance with resumes, job interviewing and salary negotiation techniques, and re-training opportunities.(see schedule)
