The NEWburg Library

Newburg community residents gathered on August 19, 2008, to talk with library director Craig Buthod and architect Jeffrey Scherer about what they want in their new library.  On October 21, 70 residents celebrated the design of the new library.

Newburg library users know what they want.  With two middle schools and three elementary schools in the area, the big focus is on study space, books and computers to help children and teens succeed in school.  Residents asked the architect to remember that adults need a quiet space for reading, too.  They want a library that is well-lit and welcoming, with ample staffing.  Being forward-thinking, they asked for flexible space to accommodate a variety of programs and the changing needs of the community.

And we listened.  Design and construction are on a fast track.  Architects are incorporating features identified by the residents.  The library will be outfitted with the latest technology for computer, internet access and media production.  The children’s area will be large enough to accommodate plenty of books and kids and grandparents reading to kids.  A teen area, plenty of study tables, a glass-enclosed study room, and space for tutors will ensure that kids are encouraged to do their homework.  There will be a comfortable corner for adults to sit quietly and read, too, away from the 32 public computers.  One wall of “The Studio” or multi-purpose room can open up to accommodate larger groups and big programs.  The floor plan is open and there are windows everywhere for natural light.

What will the branch look like?.
