History
Library services have been provided to the neighborhoods just east of downtown Louisville for nearly a century by the Highlands and the Shelby Park branches of the Louisville Free Public Library.
These libraries were housed in early 20th century Carnegie buildings. In January 1994 the collections were merged and moved to the Mid City Mall, where the Highlands/Shelby Park branch is now one of the most accessible branches in the system -- on several TARC routes, with abundant parking, and with an open, inviting floor plan praised by advocates for the disabled.
Patrons often inquire about the disposition of the old Carnegie buildings. The Louisville Youth Alliance operates a youth center in the Shelby Park building, and the Highland location, which was the very first branch library of LFPL in 1906, has been renovated in keeping with its historic character and now houses professional offices.
The modern Highlands/Shelby Park branch is the only LFPL location inside an enclosed mall. Patron visits now more than double the combined usage of the two previous locations
